National Combined Accident Reduction Effort (C.A.R.E.) Holiday Lifesavers Weekend

SPRINGFIELD, IL - The Illinois State Police (ISP) will participate in the National Combined Accident Reduction Effort (C.A.R.E.) Holiday Lifesavers Weekend, December 15-17. During this enforcement mobilization to remove drunk drivers from Illinois roads and highways, enforcement activities will include roadside safety checks, saturation patrols, and aggressive driving reduction efforts.

Motorists are encouraged to drive with their headlights turned on in support of "Lights on for Life," Friday, December 15, a day to remember those killed or injured by impaired drivers. Illinois State Police Director Sam W. Nolen said, "The tragedy of impaired driving is preventable. By designating a sober driver, calling a taxi, or remaining overnight, the chance of everyone arriving at their destination safely significantly increases."

Last year, 122 persons lost their lives on Illinois roadways during December - 37 of these alcohol-related. Motorists should always follow these live-saving measures when traveling:

Don’t drink and drive. Always use seat belts and child safety seats. Respect other motorists and drive defensively. Watch for changing weather conditions.

"The holiday season can be a joyous occasion for everyone by observing these safety practices," Nolen concluded
